What Is Dragon Boat Team Building?
Dragon boat team building puts your team on the water — 20 paddlers synchronising their strokes in a traditional dragon boat, racing against other teams across Singapore's reservoirs and waterways. It's physically engaging, impossible to fake, and one of the most powerful metaphors for workplace alignment: if you're not paddling in sync, you're not moving forward.
At Get Out Events, we partner with certified dragon boat operators and professional coaches to deliver safe, structured corporate dragon boat programmes for groups of 30 to 300 participants. No experience is needed — our coaches have turned complete beginners into competitive paddlers in under 30 minutes.
How Our Dragon Boat Programme Works
- Safety Briefing & Basics — Professional coaches teach paddling technique, safety protocols, and boat commands on land before anyone touches water. Life vests fitted and checked for all participants.
- Practice Runs — Teams take their boats out for guided practice sessions. Coaches focus on rhythm, synchronisation, and building confidence on water. Usually 20–30 minutes of on-water practice.
- Race Day Format — Qualifying heats, semi-finals, and a grand final. Each race is 200–500 metres. Professional timing and live commentary keep the energy high from start to finish.
- Awards & Debrief — Post-race celebration with prizes, photos, and a facilitated debrief connecting the paddling experience to workplace teamwork, communication, and trust.
What to Expect: A Full Programme Timeline
Here is how a typical 3.5-hour dragon boat day unfolds for a group of 80–150 participants:
- 0–30 min — Registration & safety briefing: Participants arrive, receive life vests, and attend a full safety orientation. Coaches explain paddling technique, boat commands ("paddles up!", "hold water!"), and race format.
- 30–60 min — Land drills & team formation: Teams of 20 (plus a drummer and steerer) are formed. Each team practises stroke synchronisation on land before boarding.
- 60–90 min — On-water practice: Teams board their boats for guided practice. Coaches give real-time feedback from accompanying safety craft. Emphasis on timing and rhythm, not speed.
- 90–180 min — Tournament races: Qualifying heats run with full commentary. MC on shore drives the energy. Spectators can rotate to cheer from the bank.
- 180–210 min — Finals & medal ceremony: The top teams race in the grand final. Trophy presentation, group photo, and a facilitated reflection on team dynamics observed during the races.
Why Dragon Boat Works for Team Building
- Physical synchronisation — you literally cannot succeed without being in rhythm with your teammates. Misaligned strokes slow the whole boat — a real-time lesson in coordination.
- Trust and vulnerability — being on water together creates a shared experience that builds deep trust in ways that office exercises cannot replicate.
- Natural leadership — the drummer/steerer role creates visible leadership moments. Watch who steps up, who supports, and how the team communicates under pressure.
- Level playing field — strength matters far less than coordination and teamwork. Smaller, synchronised teams often beat larger, stronger ones.
- Unforgettable — teams remember dragon boat races for years. The combination of physical challenge, shared risk, and collective achievement leaves a lasting impression.
- Debrief richness — dragon boat generates powerful debrief material: moments of leadership, trust, frustration, and breakthrough that translate directly into workplace conversations.

Dragon Boat Locations in Singapore
- Kallang Basin — Singapore's premier dragon boat venue, adjacent to the Sports Hub. Sheltered, calm water with excellent changing facilities and ample spectator areas. Our most popular venue for corporate groups.
- Marina Bay — Iconic backdrop with Marina Bay Sands, the Esplanade, and the city skyline. A premium option for events where visual impact matters. Longer logistics lead time required.
- Bedok Reservoir — Calm waters in a serene natural setting. Practical for east-side companies and groups wanting a quieter, more reflective environment.
- Sentosa — Beach-adjacent dragon boat racing with resort facilities nearby. Ideal for combining the water activity with a beach party, barbecue, or resort venue.
All venues include changing facilities and covered rest areas. We handle all venue booking and logistics as part of the programme package.
Group Size Guide
| Group Size | No. of Boats | Tournament Format | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30–40 pax | 2 boats | Best-of-3 head-to-head | 2.5–3 hrs |
| 40–80 pax | 2–4 boats | Round-robin + final | 3–3.5 hrs |
| 80–160 pax | 4–8 boats | Heats + semi-finals + grand final | 3.5–4 hrs |
| 160–300 pax | 8–15 boats | Full tournament with multiple heats | 4–5 hrs |
For very large groups (200+ pax), we recommend splitting the programme so half the group races while the other half participates in a complementary land-based activity (e.g., beach games or a team challenge), then swapping. This keeps everyone engaged and avoids long waiting periods.

"The dragon boat programme was the highlight of our company retreat. Watching our finance team and engineering team race each other — the cheering, the splashing, the pure joy — that's something a conference room can never deliver."
— CEO, SaaS Company (120 pax)
Frequently Asked Questions
How early do we need to book?
Dragon boat requires venue and boat reservation, so we recommend booking 4–6 weeks in advance. For large groups (150+) or Marina Bay, allow 6–8 weeks.
What should participants wear?
Comfortable athletic wear that can get wet. Sports shoes or sandals with a strap (no flip-flops). Sunscreen recommended. We advise participants not to bring valuables.
Can we combine dragon boat with other activities?
Yes — a popular pairing is dragon boat in the morning followed by a cooking team building lunch, or a post-race beach barbecue at Sentosa. We can coordinate the full day.
Is the activity suitable for older participants?
Dragon boat is suitable for most fitness levels. Participants who cannot paddle comfortably can take on the drummer or steerer roles — equally important and less physically demanding.
